Udon Caden (우동카덴) was the best cheap eat of my recent trip to Seoul. I have been a big fan of the show Please Take Care of My Refrigerator these days. If you like cooking programs this one is great because many Korean chefs cook using only the ingredients from the refrigerators of Korean celebrities. I really wanted to try Chef Jung Ho Young‘s (정호영) restaurant Udon Caden because of the show and also because I just like udon in general. This restaurant more than met my expectations and I will be sure to return on my next trip.
I stayed near the Myeongdong area during my trip and had to take two subway lines to Mapo to go to this restaurant but it was worth it. Most of the udon entrees start at 7,000 KRW (about $6) but taste much better than $20 bowls of udon in NY. The quality of the noodles, cooking, and flavor were superb. Make sure to arrive early, I got there right before opening time on a weekday and the restaurant filled right up very quickly. When I left there was a line of about 30 people outside the restaurant.
What I loved about Udon Caden
1. The fried vegetable topping of my bukake udon was fried just right so that it was not greasy
2. The udon noodles are not overcooked
3. The flavor of the dashi broth is great, not too salty
4. The appetizers are also good, the fried chicken is highly recommend!
5. Most entrees are under $10
6. Each entree comes with a complimentary mini gyudon, beef rice bowl

One of the best value meals in Seoul with great taste at Udon Caden
Ideal meal would be fried chicken appetizer (small size for 2 people) $4 and 2 Udons ($7-$8 each). The mini beef rice bowl is included. You can have a great meal for 2 people here for under $25.
