I had to try the modern Korean cuisine at Si Wha Dam (시화담) based on the amazing food photography on their website and recommendation in a list of top restaurants in Seoul by CNN. Si Wha Dam has two branches, one in the artsy antique district of Insadong and the other in a fancy gallery setting in Itaewon. I visited the Insadong location because the location fit into my schedule, but learned from the waitress that the experience at Itaewon seems to be more artistic and in a prettier setting. The menu pricing is also different between the two locations, and Itaewon is more expensive than Insadong. The lunch prixe fix starts around $30 per person for 8-10 plates. This restaurant wins points for food styling and presentation. About half the dishes on the tasting were either very interesting, unique, fun, or modern. The most memorable dishes were the kimchee pasta and bulgogi sandwich which is sandwiched between two rice cakes / tteok instead of bread. Besides the tasting, I also ordered a house makgeolli which was really good and different and stir fried squid which was pretty average. I would like to try the Itaewon branch next time I go to Korea. If you only have a few days in Seoul, I would choose Jung Sik Dang over Si Wha Dam because the lunch tasting price is similar but the taste and quality is superior at Jung Sik Dang.
